The school doors opened for the little kiddies last Tuesday, the day after Labor Day.
Funny thing…I slept fine the Monday night before. No extra nerves keeping me awake this night before the beginning of school, as they had kept me awake in previous years.
I think that my class this year will be manageable. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still an inner city school. I will still have problems. But, knock on wood, I think it will be easier than last year. How could it be worse than last year ?? (if you don’t know, I will happily write you the details of my most strenuous and difficult year teaching).
I have 16 6 year-olds. 9 boys, 7 girls. The boys always cause me more problems than the girls, therefore I will have more problem makers simply from the gender make-up of my class. But I have some parents who are interested in helping out, and 2 who have already spent time in the classroom with us. This, my friends, is a bonus and a lot of help.
However, now that I think about it, the boys who give me the most problems are those who have the most difficulty reading. So, this behavior is logical. They can not understand what we are doing, therefore they act out.
I will have to get to work on teaching them to read. And on challenging those that can already read to reach higher levels.
I’ve got my work cut out for me at school this year.
Between Friday night at 9pm and right now (Saturday at 6:30 p.m.), I have already slept 12 hours.
