Hello!

I am writing you, again, on behalf of some of my students. I want to
take 4 kids to see the Nutcracker.

2 of the students are the same ones you sent to summer camp this past
year. In case you don’t remember, these are 2 ultra inner-city girls,
who do not have the same experiences that we consider to be ‘normal’.
They go from school to daycare until 11pm, when their mom picks them
up and takes them, and their 3 younger brothers, home. The one who is
now 8 was my student 2 years ago. I currently take her and her older
sister (who is 11) to swimming lessons once/week.

The other 2 are also sisters. Their mom passed away from breast
cancer about 3 weeks
ago. They are 6 and 3. The 6 year old is in my class this year.
Their dad and grandma have been coming to school with the 6 year-old,
trying to help her get back into the swing of things; trying to
establish a ‘normal’ routine.

I guess I am looking to start a biannual fundraiser. Because I want
to do neat things with these students, but I don’t actually make
enough money to do all that I want to do.

I will not be offended if you choose not to donate. I understand that
times are tough, and people are asking for money from all over. I
promise not to make a check list, and not to remember all of the
people I send this to!

If you do want to donate, please send me a check ASAP. I have
estimated the cost to be $450. This is for 6 tickets (another teacher
has offered to ‘help’ me!); lunch before the ballet, and clothes for
the performance for the two older girls.

If you are able and willing to donate, please ask me for my address so you may send a check.

PLEASE forward this to anyone you think might be interested in
helping. And I’ll get you ready for it…there will be another call for
support for summer camp in a few months!!

Thank you , thank you, thank you…
Andrea

Time to reflect 16, November 2008

I know it’s not yet Thanksgiving.

But I’m already thinking about Christmas.

Do you think I’ll be able to get discounted tickets to the Nutcracker for 2 of my ultra-inner city students, as well as the 2 who lost their mom to cancer 2 weeks ago? I sent an e-mail to the Milwaukee Ballet yesterday, asking for a scholarship. Keep your fingers crossed.

I also think about Chanukah, as I am, by the way, half Jewish. And about how Chanukah was not about presents, in the beginning. It was about reflecting on the miracle that allowed the light to last for 8 days.

While we can not turn darkness into light, we can perform minor miracles in our days. I think that this is what the holidays are about. Doing things, some might consider them minor miracles, that help to diminish other people’s burdens.
